In this blog, I will cover nine strategies to help you get relief from cervical dizziness. This condition is dizziness or vertigo caused by the neck.

Strategy #1: Improve Your Posture

If you feel dizzy, you can try to improve your posture. Straighten up your head and bring your neck to a neutral position.

Strategy #2: Cold Therapy

Some patients can get relief from cervical dizziness by applying ice to the back of their neck for 20 minutes at a time.

Patients can reapply the ice more than once per day as long as the skin returns to room temperature in between. A bag of frozen corn or peas with a towel can work, as well as soft cervical ice packs intended for this use.

Ice on the back of the neck can be used for relief from neck pain, inflammation, tension headaches, migraines, dizziness, vertigo, and nausea.

In my online store, I have a link to a soft cervical ice pack I recommend.

Strategy #3: Moist Heat

Some patients get relief using moist heat on their neck for 20-30 minutes at a time, to help the relax their neck muscles. I personally like to use a hot water bottle covered by a cloth.

Heat can increase local inflammation, so this strategy is primarily for patients with muscle tension, headaches, and muscle trigger points in their neck.

The hot water bottle I use and recommend is linked in my online store.

Strategy #4: Self Massage

Releasing muscle trigger points and loosening up the surrounding fascia using massage tools can be helpful to reduce neck dizziness.

I share the neck care tools I use and recommend to my patients in the neck care section of my online store:

Strategy #5: Medication

For some patient with neck dizziness, certain medications may bring relief. Not every patient with neck dizziness experiences relief with medications, and all medications have side effects.

I personally use NSAIDs to relieve dizziness from my neck when needed. My doctor has also prescribed certain medications for my neck to use as needed.

Talk to your doctor about what medications might be right for you, such as NSAIDs or muscle relaxers.

Strategy #6: Pain Relief Cream

I like to use Arnica cream on any painful spots on my neck. I keep Arnica gel with my personal care products in my bathroom, to use each time I get out of the shower if needed.

Not every patient with cervical dizziness can get relief by applying pain cream to their neck, but many patients do feel better with this strategy.

The Arnica product I use and recommend for pain relief is available in my online store:

In this video, I demonstrate how I apply arnica gel to my neck:

Before trying a new arnica or topical pain relief product on their neck, many of my patients will apply a small amount to their forearm in order to make sure they do not have an allergic skin reaction.

Strategy #7: Get Moving

Interestingly, many patients with cervical dizziness actually feel better when they start moving around!

Key points from the history of patients with cervical dizziness includes comments like feeling relief from dizziness while walking, dancing, or using the elliptical.

Not every patient with cervical dizziness feels better with moving depending on their individual case, but many patients with neck dizziness feel better while moving. I encourage those patients to go for one or two walks a day.

If they also have concurrent BPPV, I advise them not to go birdwatching while they’re walking through their neighborhood. Patients with BPPV may choose to avoid moving their around head too much while walking until the BPPV is resolved.

Strategy #8: Consult a Cervical Specialist

Patients with cervical dizziness ultimately need to consult with a provider who specializes in this problem.

Most patients with cervical dizziness need manual therapy adjustments. Some patients may also need exercises for stretching, strengthening, and postural improvement

I talk about which specialists can help with cervical dizziness in the following blog and YouTube video.

Strategy #9: Dig Deeper for the Root Cause

Often I find that cervical dizziness has a deeper root cause that can be addressed once discovered. I already mentioned posture and muscle trigger points as potential root causes of cervical dizziness in this blog.

Other potentially deeper root causes of chronic or recurrent cervical dizziness include improper ergonomics, certain hobbies and occupations, and certain sleeping and lounging positions.

I’ve written extensively about the topic of upper cervical dizziness in my book, especially in the chapter about thinking outside the box to solve your case.
