An illusion of movement of the body or the surrounding environment. Usually has a spinning component, but can also be translational or a tilting sensation. According to the Barany Society (a Sweden-based International society of vestibular experts), vertigo is defined as “the sensation of self-motion when no self-motion is occurring or the sensation of distorted self-motion during an otherwise normal head movement.”
