Nerve damage in the feet or hands, often due to impaired blood flow from uncontrolled blood glucose (sugar) levels in people with diabetes. This can also occur as a result of a medication side effect, such as with certain types of chemotherapy, or as a result of certain lifestyle choices, such as excessive alcohol intake.
