Calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear that have a specific and necessary physiological function in the otolithic organs (utricle and saccule). When otoconia break free from their membrane and float into the semi-circular canals of the vestibular system through the endolymphatic fluid, the condition is caused BPPV.
BPPV is the most common inner ear cause of vertigo.
